Stella’s First (mini) Road Trip – Mount Rainier

Although we live in West Seattle, I would still consider Mount Rainier a road trip when it involves an infant. In the last week of our Seattle stay, before “moving” across the pond to Korea, my mom, dad, Stella and I drove down to Mount Rainier National Park.  We decided to do the scenic loop of the park, entering at the northeast corner on 410, passing by the Reflection Lakes, visiting Paradise (yep, it’s a place!), and exiting at the southwest corner before heading back home.  When it was all said and done, we were gone for 8 hours and drove about 225 miles.  Stella was an absolute trooper and had her first diaper changed in the trunk.  (We have since perfected that technique).

Mount Rainier is the tallest mountain in the Cascades and the tallest in the state of Washington, rising to 14,411 feet.  It has 26 major glaciers and has more glaciers than any other mountain in the lower 48 states. Although Mount Rainier is an active volcano, as of 2010 there was no evidence of an imminent eruption (the last recorded eruption occurred between 1820 and 1854).  However, an eruption could be devastating for all areas surrounding the volcano.  Mount Rainier is currently listed as a Decade Volcano, or one of the 16 volcanoes with the greatest likelihood of causing great loss of life and property if eruptive activity resumes.  Lets hope it continues to stay in it’s beautiful, stable state! :/

We finally got a family photo of the 4 of us (it took 3 people taking our photo to actually get the mountain in the background :/ )
