Abruzzo – Italy’s Little Known Gem

Every time we venture to southern Italy, we have an absolutely wonderful time and this last trip to the Abruzzo region was no exception.  Abruzzo is not one of the places that jumps off the map in terms of tourism, but it certainly could if it was better promoted.  The region contains beautiful blue lakes, highlands that could rival those in Scotland (with better weather), massive peaks that offer trekking in the summer and skiing in the winter, and some of the warmest people we’ve met in Italy.  However, it also witnessed tremendous loss over four years ago, on April 6, 2009, when L’Aquila, the capital city of the Abruzzo region, was hit by a 6.3 earthquake and virtually destroyed.  Although we had many highs on this trip – seeing Lago di Barrea, the Rocca Calascio Fortress, and the Celano Castle – we were haunted by the level of destruction in L’Aquila.  … [Read More]
